How to care for your cat’s coat

Cats groom themselves, but regular help removes some of the loose hair, especially during shedding season.

How often?

It mainly depends on coat length. A short-haired cat often only needs brushing now and then; a long-haired cat usually needs more frequent care to avoid knots. Your vet or a groomer can advise you for your cat.

Getting your cat used to it gently

  • Choose a calm moment, when your cat is relaxed.
  • Start with short sessions, in the direction of the hair.
  • Begin with the areas it enjoys, such as the back and cheeks.
  • Stop before it gets impatient.

Helpful extra tools

A corner brush fixed to the wall lets your cat rub against it whenever it likes, and collects some of the hair on its bristles. For hair already on the sofa or your clothes, a reusable pet hair glove is handy.

When to ask for advice

If you notice unusual hair loss, patches, itching or redness, see your vet.
